The 2016-2017 season at RiverStage Community Theatre celebrated a rich variety of theatrical experiences, ranging from classic American drama and original local works to musical comedy and Shakespearean comedy. Through a diverse lineup of productions, RiverStage continued its commitment to providing high-quality community theatre while showcasing the talents of performers, directors, playwrights, and volunteers from across the Susquehanna Valley.

The season opened with A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, directed by Derek Scott. Widely regarded as one of the most important works in American theatre, the play follows the Younger family as they pursue their dreams while confronting challenges of race, identity, and opportunity in mid-century Chicago. Through its powerful storytelling and unforgettable characters, the production offered audiences a moving and thought-provoking theatrical experience.

In the spring, RiverStage presented the Gaspipe One Act Play Festival, the organization’s annual celebration of original theatre. The festival provided local playwrights, directors, and performers with an opportunity to bring new stories to the stage, highlighting the creativity and artistic talent found throughout the region. As one of RiverStage’s signature events, the festival continued its tradition of fostering new voices and innovative theatrical work.

Summer brought the musical adventure The Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert and Sullivan, directed by Jove Graham with musical direction by Diane Scott. Filled with memorable songs, colorful characters, and comic misunderstandings, this beloved comic opera delighted audiences with its humor, charm, and timeless appeal. The production showcased RiverStage’s ability to bring large-scale musical productions to life while providing entertainment for audiences of all ages.

The season concluded with A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare, presented by Gaspipe Theatre Company as its annual outdoor summer production. One of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies, the play follows a cast of lovers, fairies, and mischievous spirits through a magical forest where reality and fantasy collide. Performed outdoors and offered free to the community, the production continued RiverStage’s long-standing tradition of making live theatre accessible while celebrating the enduring works of The Bard.

The 2016-2017 season reflected RiverStage Community Theatre’s dedication to artistic excellence, community engagement, and diverse programming. By presenting a season that balanced classic drama, original local theatre, musical comedy, and Shakespeare, RiverStage continued its mission of enriching the cultural life of the Susquehanna Valley and creating meaningful opportunities for artists and audiences alike.
